Objective:The main objective of ISO 50001 standard is to improve energy-related performance and energy efficiency continuously and to identify energy reduction opportunities. This systematic approach will help organizations to establish systems and processes.
Consistent energy management helps organizations to realize untapped energy efficiency potential. They will benefit from cost savings and make a significant contribution to environmental and climate protection, for example by the permanent reduction of CO2 emissions. The standard should alert employees and in particular the management level to the immediate and long-term energy management gains that can be made. The organization can discover potential savings and competitive advantages. Further more a huge image boost for the organization can be created.
Using energy efficiently helps organizations save money as well as helping to conserve resources and tackle climate change. ISO 50001 supports organizations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently, through the development of an energy management system (EnMS). ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management.
ISO 50001 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to:
- Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
- Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy
- Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use
- Measure the results
- Review how well the policy works, and
- Continually improve energy management.
Key Benefits of having Energy Management System Certification
Reduce operational costs
The most obvious of all benefits is the EMS’s ability to reduce electricity costs by monitoring and optimizing energy used for lighting, heating and cooling, ventilation, etc. By collecting data, it allows administrators to predict energy usage and budget for the same more effectively. You can also use this data to prevent unnecessary work such as ensuring all lights are switched off after working hours, etc.
Improve overall well-being and productivity
If a person is uncomfortable in his/her environment, they will not feel like working. Thus, temperature regulation and lighting are the important to ensuring productivity. With an EMS, you can regulate indoor temperature while minimizing energy usage as well as keep the area well-lit with minimal lights. This improves overall well-being and boosts productivity. Similarly, maintaining optimal ventilation, lighting and temperature keeps mold and bacteria at bay, thus reducing the risk of illnesses.
Optimize expenses
When you have a high energy bill, you may need to cut other expenses such as marketing costs, R & D, etc. This is detrimental to your success in the long run. But, with an Energy Management System you can reduce wastage and in turn, operating costs for energy. This allows you to reallocate funds towards other tasks such as employee salaries, marketing, etc.
Build a positive brand image
In today’s world, every organization is keen on reducing their carbon footprint. By optimizing energy consumption and minimizing waste, companies can shine a positive light on themselves. This helps build better relationships with customers and partners as well as potential investors.
Increase property value
If you own your space and are looking at the prospect of selling it someday, having an EMS greatly increases its value. This is true for private residences as well as commercial structures. And why not? The system reduces overall expenses on energy and also reduces repair bills.
Increase ROI
You expect a certain ROI from any appliance you buy. But wear and tear and energy leaks can have an adverse effect on the ROI. With an EMS you can regulate power transmission, identify energy leaks, lower power at peak times, etc. This extends the lifespan of your appliances and increases their ROI.
Installing an Energy Management System is a cost-effective solution. You can customize these systems to meet your requirements and conserve energy. Whether you are looking for a way to reduce operational costs or to cut down on your contribution to global warming, it is the ideal solution.
The BSCIC ISO 50001:2018 certification involves a two-stage audit process for certification
Stage 1 is a preliminary, informal review of the EnMS, for example checking the existence and completeness of key documentation such as the organization's EnMS Manual, Document containing key energy uses etc
Stage 2 is a more detailed and formal compliance audit, independently testing the EnMS against the requirements specified in ISO 50001. The auditors will seek evidence to confirm that the management system has been properly designed and implemented, and is in fact in operation (for example by confirming that a committee or similar management body meets regularly to oversee the EnMS). BSCIC Certification audits are conducted by ISO 50001 Lead Auditors.
